April 1, 2011

It’s a new month, and here at H-5 Inc. that means a new monthly theme. It’s exciting for us, because this month’s theme of data, which we planned for April in conjunction with Mathematics Awareness Month, is really at the forefront of where geography is headed in terms of employment outside of academia. Plotting data spatially, or mapping, is a powerful, important tool that is growing rapidly in all disciplines–in earth and space sciences, environmental sciences, oceanography, urban planning, resource management, as well as the social sciences. So, as we say goodbye to Geography and Education we welcome a whole new month devoted to just data. Topics will undoubtably include, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), data integrity, databases, infographics, how to look critically at maps that present you with data, data transparency, visual and intellectual hierarchies, as well as anything Chey has up her sleeve (which god knows was more than I did for Education). We will have Education wrapped up and our initial posts on Data up within a few days. Cheers,

–H-5 Inc.
