mapping africa

March 17, 2011

africa seems to be the continent that the majority of people struggle with the most in terms of geography.  i feel pretty good about my geographic familiarity with africa and even i will admit that if you put a blank map of africa in front of me i couldn’t correctly fill in all of the countries.  anyway, there is currently a “rediscovering african geographies” showcase at the royal geographic society in london and they put together a cool little slideshow of some of their maps with commentary discussing how the changing maps reflect a changing world.  i tried to embed it in the post but they wouldn’t let me so you’ll have to head here, to the bbc news website, to watch it.  it’s only about five minutes and there’s some interesting stuff, i particularly liked the first map.  cheers.
