7 billion

population is going to be an issue, already is an issue, in human/environment interactions.  national geographic did a special issue on population recently.  this is a little video they put together as part of the coverage.  urban geography is a subfield that has really become a big deal in recent years and some of the facts in this video might give you some clues as to why.  although i knew about the mass rural to urban migration i was a little surprised at the rapid increase in “mega cities.”  anyway, it’s a cool little video and the combination of an increasing population,  climate variability, and the migration from rural (agricultural) areas to urban centers will certainly complicate issues of food security, the results of which can be seen in egypt.
